SCI Awareness Day at 180 Medical

This is our second year at 180 Medical to set aside a special day to honor all those living with spinal cord injuries, including many of our patients, family, and friends, as well as our founder Todd Brown. Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day is an amazing opportunity for our employees to learn more about what it’s like to live with a spinal cord injury. Plus, we always hold a big pizza and dessert fundraiser, which goes to benefit people living with spinal cord injuries

Wearing Green for SCI Awareness

A big part of how we start celebrating Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day at 180 Medical is by wearing green, which is the official color for SCI Awareness. We really go all out!

Some of us wore green t-shirts, cardigans, pants, and even glasses frames. Josh, one of our employees, even dyed his beard green for the day!

Raising Funds for People with Spinal Cord Injuries

At lunch, we held a fundraiser at all our locations. Everyone could donate money to enjoy some pizza, cake, and brownies. It was even more delicious, knowing we were raising funds for a great cause.

All employees voted which organization they want to support with this year’s fundraiser. By the end of the day, we raised over $500, which will directly benefit Will2Walk.

SCI Day Wheelchair Challenge

In addition, 180 Medical employees took the Wheelchair Challenge. Each volunteer spent a few hours getting around the office in a manual wheelchair.

By the end of the day, the Wheelchair Challenge’s impact was clear! Every person learned something from their experience.

Many participants said they encountered a lot of challenges, such as getting in and out of the accessible restroom stall, holding and carrying items, and maneuvering through doorways. Plus, they said going outdoors was the greatest challenge, especially when they went up inclines.

Brent, one of our Documentation Specialists, says, “I see now more than ever the people with spinal cord injuries are incredibly strong, both mentally and physically. I respect them very much.”

I love working for a company that takes the extra step to help support those with spinal cord injuries and other conditions.

The Importance of Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day

We want those living with spinal cord injuries to know they are not alone!

This year really helped many more of us realize just a fraction of the challenges that those living with spinal cord injuries face, and we were all happy to do our part in raising awareness.

Overall, SCI Day at 180 Medical was once again a fun and educational time. We loved the chance to participate and give back during Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month.
