Product Specialist Employee Spotlight: Meet Cassy

by Jessica July 19 2018 14:06
cassy 180 medical product specialist header

180 Medical is a leading supplier of intermittent catheters and ostomy products in the country. We like to make sure our customers are given all the tools and knowledge they need to feel confident and comfortable with beginning to use their urological and/or ostomy supplies, so we provide plenty of on-the-job training, including keeping up to date on new products being released on the market. This is all so that our employees can truly earn the title of "Specialist."

We love to take time to recognize and reward our employees for all they do! Today, take a minute to get to know Cassy, one of our knowledgeable and caring Product Specialists.

Cassy, how long have you been a part of the 180 Medical family now?

5 years, 9 months, and 4 days! But who's counting? I was a Customer Specialist when I first started in October of 2012, then I transitioned in 2015 to a Product Specialist.

During your time here so far, how has 180 Medical helped you in your professional development?

180 Medical helped me grow into an actual "career," as opposed to just another "job." Working here has given me confidence in myself, my capabilities, and an inner drive that I didn't even know I had.

What is an accomplishment that you're really proud of?

I have been a Product Specialist for a total of 13 quarters so far, and in those quarters, I have been the Top Product Specialist of the Quarter 9 times thus far.

What is the best part of working at 180 Medical to you?

Being able to help others! When people are brand new to cathing, they're sometimes totally overwhelmed, and they're not really sure where or how to begin. Being able to be a calming voice, talk them through the whole process, and help them select the best catheter product that's right for them is always rewarding! Whether it's someone new to cathing or a parent of a child who will need to start using catheters, I love getting to calm any fears they may have, help them understand they're not alone, and hold their hand every step of the way.

Also, I love our casual dress code at work!

What's an average day in the life for you as a Product Specialist? What are some of your favorite parts of being in your position?
erica quote on cassy ps
I get to speak with new and existing customers, set up their accounts, walk them through any issues, make sure they have a catheter that works best for their needs, and make any needed changes to their accounts. I also help in assisting with some of the new hire training, as well as occasional training classes for existing employees. I just like to offer any help I can to anyone in need.

But my favorite part is the personal connection I get to have with the customers. I get to know their life stories, their kids' and grandchildren's names, how they found out about 180 Medical, what they enjoy doing in the spare time, and even what they're making for dinner that night. Oh, and the weather! That's always fun to discuss when I'm talking to someone in a different time zone and part of the country. I just love being a source of knowledge and comfort for them.

Do you have any special memories with one of our customers that made a positive impact on your life?

My favorite interaction so far was a gentleman that I got to talk with every single month. Same time, same day (the 3rd Thursday of every month), and same time at 8:30 a.m. (CST). He wanted very little communication the first time I called him, but somehow over time, I was able to gain his trust, and we became friends! He became one of my favorite people to check in on. He never married or had children, but he loved his momma, and he worked hard. I remember that the highlight of his year was always a month-long cruise to Alaska. He made me laugh, and he made me thankful for the family I have. Just a joy to talk to.

Even though he has since passed away, I still keep the postcards he would send me at work from Alaska on his cruise, addressed to "Kathy." Every time I see those, I remember his stories and when he told me that I was his one "true friend" that he had left, and it still makes me smile.

What's life like for you outside of work?

I am a mom to 3 crazy kids. My oldest is 17 and getting ready to be a senior in high school this fall. My second is 9, and my littlest son is 4. When I'm not cooking dinner or doing their laundry, I enjoy working in my yard, playing with the kids outside, watching TV, and reading. I also coach my daughter's softball team, so we spend a lot of nights at the ball fields. We just finished our spring season with the 2nd place title!! Pretty proud of that.

cassy and family

Any fun vacation plans or anything on your "Bucket List" that you hope to accomplish?

We're planning a family vacation to Florida in August!

cassy and kidsI have accomplished one big milestone on my bucket list! I just celebrated 2 years as an official homeowner!

Something else on my bucket list I still want to accomplish is becoming a foster mom. I have a real soft spot in my heart for children, and my biggest goal is to become a certified foster parent and take in as many kids as I'm able to provide a good home for them.

So many kids grow up in hard or scary situations that they have no control over, and that breaks my heart. But I have a home of my own now, and becoming a foster mom is something I know I am meant to do eventually.

I get asked a lot about how I will handle it when the children have to leave. My heart has always told me the same thing: even though I know I will love the kids I am blessed to help, and it will be super hard for me to let them go when the time comes, I know that even if I only have them in my care for a short time, that time might be the only time they have love, security, and hope. And that just might make a difference in the rest of their lives. That might even be enough to change their destiny.

That's incredibly inspiring. Do you have any quotes that help keep you motivated?

I have two!

"To make a difference in someone's life, you don't have to be brilliant, rich, beautiful, or perfect. You just have to care." -- Unknown

"A hundred years from now, it will not matter what kind of car I drove, what kind of house I lived in, how much money I had in the bank...but the world may be a better place because I made a difference in the life of a child." -- Forest Witcraft

Lastly, what advice you would offer to someone who is considering applying for a job at 180 Medical?

1. Take time to research what we do here. I wasn't sure before I came in for my first interview, and when I was asked how comfortable I would be talking about urinary catheters, I was speechless. I wasn't sure if it was a trick question! But I made it through, and now almost 6 years later, I talk about catheters all the time!

 2. You have to be able to really care. The people we help have often been through hard situations, and we need to offer them empathy, compassion, and patience.

Cassy, you're so important to 180 Medical, and we thank you for all you do, both inside and outside the workplace. You're a shining example of "the 180 Way!"

Receptionist Employee Spotlight: Meet Melissa

by Jessica June 5 2018 06:39

180 Medical is a leading supplier in the nation for intermittent catheters and ostomy products. We make it a goal to staff our company with people who truly want to help people and make a difference, and we love to reward and recognize our employees for the amazing work they do.

Today, we'd love for you to meet Melissa, one of our long-time employees who currently works as the Lead Receptionist.

Melissa, you've been a valued employee at 180 Medical for nearly 10 years! Congratulations! What makes having a career with 180 Medical so rewarding to you?

melissa and angie Above all else, 180 Medical treats their employees like family. That means a lot to me, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that way.

I feel great pride in everything we accomplish. We do everything in our power to help our customers and give them the best service possible.

Knowing that I come to work to actively take part in helping others every day is a huge plus. I just feel truly blessed to work for 180 Medical.

You've held a variety of roles within the company. Talk to us a little bit about some of the previous job titles you've had and what you do now.

alexandra quoteWhen I first started at 180 Medical in July of 2008, I was hired as a Documentation Specialist.

Later, as the company grew and more and more referrals came in from hospitals and doctor's facilities for more catheter supply orders, I was given the opportunity to move to an Account Coordinator position. I began to work and process all of the inbound faxes.

As we continued to grow even more, that workload increased tremendously within the next few years, so a few more people were added on to that team to help out with the growing number of referrals to process.

I am now working as the Lead Receptionist.

On top of answering the phones alongside my team, my job involves executive assistant duties and helping the reception team become the very best it can be, since we are the very first ones to speak to our customers when they call in.

What do you think makes the receptionist team and 180 Medical stand apart from other companies?

Almost all other companies out there, even medical supply providers, use automated systems to answer all of their incoming calls and direct their customers to a department using complicated phone menus. It's also the norm for most people to be put on hold for a long time when they call other companies, just waiting to speak to a real person.

At 180 Medical, our customers' experiences are totally different!

From the moment you dial our number, your call is answered by a live person (one of the receptionists on my team). They will listen to your needs and determine where to transfer your call, all while treating you with courtesy and compassion. And we make it our goal, no matter how busy we get, to never let you stay waiting on hold for more than a minute or two.

We make it a point to be stand apart from other companies out there, because we want to help anyone who needs us and turn their lives around!

We all genuinely enjoy what we do, and we can provide the quality intermittent catheter and ostomy products you need along with top-notch, personalized customer service that that is noticeably different from other medical supply companies.

melissa and receptionists thunder up

What do you like to do most when you're not at work?

I love to spend time with my three girls and my husband. We are really involved with church and our church family, and I love getting the opportunity to reach out and help others through that as well.

If I had to pick, I'd say my favorite place in the world is at the lake with my friends and family, just swimming and fishing all day.

melissa fishing in 180 medical gear

What's something during your time at 180 Medical that has truly made you proud of yourself and your career?

rylie quoteWinning the Company Coin at one of our recent quarterly meetings has definitely been my greatest accomplishment so far.

The Company Coin is awarded by our executive team to employees that stand out, go above and beyond, and display an owner's mentality and integrity.

It is such an honor to be chosen for such an award!

Melissa, you're such an important part of the 180 Medical family!

Thank you for everything you do in displaying the 180 Way, both inside and outside of the workplace.

Verifications Specialist Employee Spotlight: Meet Summer

180 medical employee spotlight on summer verifications specialist

180 Medical is a leading supplier in the nation for intermittent catheters and ostomy products. We make it a goal to staff our company with people who truly want to help people and make a difference. 180 Medical is a rewarding workplace for our employees, for many reasons, including competitive benefits, full training to earn the title of a specialist, as well as opportunities for growth and learning within the company.

There are also many fun extras and perks throughout the year that make 180 Medical such a fun place to be every weekday, including our annual Thunder Up decorating contest to show our support for our local NBA Team, the Oklahoma City Thunder, as well as plenty of opportunities to support our community in events like the annual MS Walk. In fact, we've been named one of the Best Places to Work in Oklahoma for 8 years as of 2017.

We're happy to feature one of our employees who has been with us for two and a half years and currently works as a Verifications Specialist.

Summer's Team Supervisor, Sarah, says, "Summer is the glue that binds our team together. Her outgoing personality and positive attitude brighten the atmosphere in our department. From her very first day as a Verifications Specialist, she has been 100% committed to doing her best every single day. Her passion to help others is evident in all that she does. We are truly lucky to have her on our team!"

Summer, congratulations on nearing your 3rd anniversary with our company! What do you feel is the best part of working at 180 Medical?

So many things! Getting to help people on a daily basis is the most rewarding thing, definitely. Also, I genuinely enjoy what I do. I have some independence and get to work without being micromanaged. It feels so good to be given the trust and capability to get our customers taken care of!

Another plus is that I have made some great friends in my co-workers!

I also love our Halloween celebrations. Dressing up in costume for the day at work and getting to take part in our annual pumpkin carving contest is so much fun. One year, we made our hallway a haunted house. We had such a blast decorating it for the yearly contest!

Describe your typical day of work as a Verifications Specialist.

It varies from day to day, although the majority of my duties revolve of around verifying insurance for our Medicaid and Medicare customers. I also confirm monthly orders of our customers' catheter supplies and ostomy supplies. Sometimes, I get to be an advocate for our customers and educate them on how receiving home health services may affect their regular orders if they have Medicare.

What do you like to do in your downtime outside of work?

180 medical employee petAfter work, I like to wind down by cooking a nice dinner at least three times a week, going out with my guy, or watching horror flicks with my dog, Coffee. Probably my favorite place to be in the world is with my boyfriend, Andy, and his daughter, Sophia. We just love to play and make each other laugh.

Some of my favorite hobbies include collecting horror memorabilia and attending concerts, movies, and live shows. I'm a big fan of brunch, so I love going to local restaurants in Oklahoma City like Cafe Cacao and Sunnyside.

I'm very passionate about volunteering to help others in need. It just feels good to help. Some of my favorite charities are Americorps, the Humane Society, and Habitat for Humanity.

How has working at 180 Medical helped with your professional development?

summer 180 medical employeeWhen I first started at 180 Medical, I was hired on as a Billing Specialist. I'm really proud of being chosen among the applicants to further my knowledge and increase my work experience as a Verifications Specialist. 180 Medical has been such an integral part of my career development, because I've learned so many new skills along the way. Being a part of our awesome Billing department has been a big asset to my current position, because it taught me how to handle calls, and it also honed my eye for detail, which is important as a Verifications Specialist.

Overall, this company has been so wonderful. 180 Medical has taught me that hard work, integrity, and compassion really does pay off.

And finally, what advice would you give to someone who is thinking about applying for a job with 180 Medical?

Don't worry. Just do it! If you're empathetic and you care about helping people, this is the place for you.

Summer, thanks so much for all you do! You're an indispensable part of our team!

Documentation Specialist Employee Spotlight: Meet Christa

by Jessica February 13 2018 08:58
180 medical documentation specialist employee spotlight

As one of the leading suppliers in America for intermittent catheters and ostomy products, 180 Medical makes it a goal to seek out and hire people who truly have a compassionate heart and want to help others. If you're seeking a career where you can actually enjoy going to work, and you want to be rewarded and fulfilled by what you do, day in and day out, you should consider applying for one of our available jobs.

What are just a few of the reasons to work at 180 Medical? We offer a competitive benefits package, extensive training and opportunity for growth within the company, and many fun extras and perks. We were also named one of the Best Places to Work in Oklahoma for the 8th year in 2017.

Now, we want to introduce you to one of our employees who has been with us for two years now. Today, meet Christa, one of our team of awesome Documentation Specialists.

What are some of your daily tasks as a Documentation Specialist here?

When we receive over new referrals from a facility or when a customer is ready to start getting their orders through 180 Medical, we want to do our part in assisting the customer by making sure their insurance will cover their required medical supplies. Often, I'm the first person to contact them to confirm their insurance information before getting their coverage verified.

Because the products we supply usually require a prescription, I'm also responsible for making sure we have a good prescription on file from their doctor. I also make sure we have all of the proper documentation that we might need, such as additional progress notes, depending on the customer's insurance requirements.

What is the best part of working at 180 Medical for you?

Well, in a lot of ways, it helped me step outside of my comfort zone. Before 180 Medical, I have mostly worked at small companies with less than 10 people. This was a nice change.

But more than anything else, getting to help people on a daily basis is the most rewarding thing. I also love my co-workers, and I feel that I have made some great friends.

Our quarterly meetings are always fun, and I also love that we have opportunities for other fun activities. My family and I had a blast at the Family Movie Night last summer, and we also really enjoyed getting to participate in the annual MS Walk.

Tell us a little bit more about life outside of work. What do you love to do in your downtime?

180 medical employee christaSomething fun people might not know about me is that I really enjoy refinishing old furniture that has been passed down in my family. I make wooden signs with quotes by hand too. Lately, I've been coloring almost every night. It's very relaxing!

I've been married for 12 years! We have a daughter who is almost 15 and a son who is almost 11 now. We love doing anything outdoors together, whether that's going camping, going to the lake and spending time at our lake house, or just playing catch in the backyard. It doesn't matter what we're doing; we just love being together outside!

What's something special on your bucket list?

I only had one thing on my bucket list, and I got to cross that off when I finally saw Garth Brooks live in concert! Now, I'm trying to figure out what else to put on it. I've always wanted to see the Rocky Horror Picture Show live.

What's an accomplishment that you're most proud of at 180 Medical?

Being awarded as one of the Top Team Performers recently at a quarterly meeting!

What's a quote that keeps you inspired?
"Love is forgiveness." This is also the tattoo I have on my arm.

And lastly, what advice would you give to someone who might be considering applying for a job with 180 Medical?

Do it!! Not only are you helping people be able to live their daily lives, but I have never worked with a better company.

Christa, thank you so much for taking time to talk. We're so grateful for you and the awesome team of Documentation Specialists here at 180 Medical.

Are you interested in becoming a part of the 180 Medical family? Don't wait! Apply today.

Customer Specialist Employee Spotlight: Meet Sarah

by Jessica January 5 2018 06:42
sarah 180 medical customer service employee

180 Medical is a national supplier of intermittent catheters, ostomy products, and related medical supplies. We make it a point to hire positive, compassionate, hard-working individuals who want to enjoy going to work, not only for a paycheck but for a rewarding place where we can make a difference. 180 Medical offers a competitive benefits package, extensive training, and many fun extras and perks. We were also named one of the Best Places to Work in Oklahoma for the 8th year in 2017.

We're excited to introduce you to Sarah, who works as a part of our great team of trained, friendly Customer Specialists.

Sarah, you've been with 180 Medical now for over 3 years, and we're so glad that you're a part of the 180 family. What are some of your responsibilities as a Customer Specialist?

Thank you! I get to directly speak to our customers and manage their accounts. The tasks that Customer Specialist typically handle can range from updating orders, adjusting account information, setting up new accounts, relaying and interpreting insurance information, helping them with various questions, and finding the right product for each person's individual needs. There's always new information to learn in this position as our department evolves!

180 Medical really does a great job in helping you find your niche. A while after becoming a Customer Specialist, I expressed interest in assisting with training. Since then, I've been provided with several opportunities to teach and train new hires. Helping my fellow coworkers learn and get to succeed is extremely gratifying.

What do you love most about working in your position at 180 Medical?

customer specialists holiday photo boothMy favorite thing is getting to encourage any customers who may be going through a difficult time or dealing with hard health issues. I like to be the listening ear that they may really need. Getting to know you have made even a small difference in their life or their experience never gets old for me.

One particular situation I recall is setting up a new female customer who was a Nurse Practitioner and brand new to self-cathing. She told me that she had helped her patients cath, but she never dreamed that she would have to do this herself. At first, she was very discouraged by her diagnosis, but after a long, heartfelt conversation, I assured her that we would make sure that the process was as easy as possible for her and send her a product that would fit well with her lifestyle and individual needs. She ended up sending a very sweet note thanking us for the encouragement, and even though she was able to eventually stop using intermittent catheters, she was very grateful for us during that time. These interactions are truly rewarding.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I'm a fitness enthusiast, and I enjoy cycling, running, and weight lifting. I love spending time with my friends and family, especially my husband Robbie and our lab-mix Rowdy. On the weekends, you might catch me on a local bike trail or serving on my church's production team by running a camera or helping with graphics.

bicyclist on trails

What's one of the top things on your bucket list?

It's hard to pick just one, but my husband is trying to talk me into skydiving...We'll see!

What quote keeps your inspired in your day-to-day life?

"Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility, count others more significant than yourselves." Philippians 2:3

And lastly, what advice would you give to someone who might be considering applying for a job with 180 Medical?

Compassion is key. If you love people and enjoy helping others, then this job is right up your alley!

Sarah, thank you so much for taking time out of your day to answer these questions! We're so proud of you and the rest of awesome Customer Specialists, who work hard and take such good care of our customers with unparalleled service.

We make it a point to hire positive, compassionate, hard-working individuals who want to enjoy going to work, not only for a paycheck but for a rewarding place where we can make a difference. 180 Medical offers a competitive benefits package, extensive training, and many fun extras and perks. We were also named one of the Best Places to Work in Oklahoma for the 7th year in 2016.

We're excited to feature Wendy, one of our Executive Urology Territory Specialists, in this month's employee spotlight.

Wendy, congratulations on recently celebrating your 7th anniversary with 180 Medical! Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Twenty years ago, I moved from Florida to Colorado without a job and not knowing anyone because I love the great outdoors, and there is so much to do here. In the summer, I do a lot of hiking, camping, biking, and golfing. I have hiked five 14-ers. I also love live music and attend a lot of outdoor concerts in the summer. During the winter, I ski and snowshoe.

180 medical employee sales rep

What is a typical day in the life for you as a territory specialist (sales representative)?
My day starts early with emails and phone calls if I am working locally, and it starts even earlier if I have a lot of drive time to the area that I am working in. Due to the size of my territory that I cover, I have a lot of time between the wheel, but I'm always making calls to nurses along the way to answer questions and collect documentation such as prescriptions and Medicare documentation. The position requires a lot of multi-tasking, but my main responsibility is to call on any facilities in my territory that may have patients who will need to use intermittent catheters. I also like to make sure that all of my facilities are stocked with sample bags so that they have what they need when they teach a patient how to catheterize

wendy l spina bifida walk n roll coloradoWhat are some of the best parts of your job?
The best part about working for 180 Medical is that we are the absolute best in the industry! We employ the most caring, knowledgeable specialists who truly go above and beyond for our customers every day, and this makes my job much easier. I can feel confident knowing that the patients our facilities send to 180 Medical for their supplies will be taken care of quickly with kindness and respect. The best part about being a territory specialist is that we get to make our own schedules, and I also enjoy getting to know the nurses and doctors and build relationships with them.

What sets 180 Medical apart from other employers, in your opinion?
180 Medical is just a rare gem that knows how to treat their employees as well as their customers. We have the most incredible company culture that I have ever experienced. Although I had been in sales for 10 years prior to 180 Medical, I had never worked for a company that gave their reps as much autonomy to run their business as 180 Medical does. One thing that working here has given me is the opportunity to learn discipline in managing my territory, such as scheduling, routing, and responding to the volume of emailed requests.

The longer I've been with 180 Medical, and the more the company has grown over the years, I've had some fun opportunities to ride along with and train more territory specialists to help them get their business going. I really enjoy training other reps and sharing my experience and knowledge with them, and 180 Medical has been a big part of allowing me to explore those strengths.

If you're interested in a sales job with 180 Medical and if you work hard and are smart, persistent, self-motivated, and driven, you will grow your territory and can be very successful!

wendy 180 medical employee testimonial

What's something about you that people might be surprised to know?
I’m a bit of an adrenaline junky, and I’m definitely the most adventuresome person in my family. I love trying new outdoor activities. I have been skydiving and fly-boarding a few times and have been a certified scuba diver since 1996.

What is one of your favorite 180 Medical memories?
My first favorite memory of 180 Medical is meeting Todd Brown (founder of 180 Medical) on my flight when I was working as a flight attendant. I will be forever grateful that I met him that day and that he gave me his card and the opportunity to interview. My second favorite memory is receiving the company coin, which was such an honor to me.

wendy l company coin 180 medical

What are some fun community events you like to make time for outside of work?
I love getting the chance to attend as many charitable events in the community as I can.  A few of the major annual events I attend are the Spina Bifida Association Walk-N-Roll, Spina Bifida Association Education Days, Adaptive Adventures, Jam the Damz, Camp Discovery, and several other adaptive programs for kids and adults with disabilities.  I also attend Boys Hope Girls Hope every year.

Wendy, thank you so much for taking the time to answer these questions! We truly appreciate you for all the hard work you put in, day in and day out, and all the compassion you show for not only our customers but for the doctors and nurses with whom you interact regularly to make sure we take care of their patients properly and compassionately. You display the 180 Way in all you do, and we're thankful for you and all of the hardworking Urology Territory Specialists every day!
