At 180 Medical, we love shining a spotlight on the wonderful, friendly people who make up our great company. Today, we’re excited to introduce you to Melissa, one of our amazing Documentation Specialist employees here who ensures we keep taking great care of the customers we’re honored to serve.
In this employee spotlight, you’ll learn more about Melissa and what she loves about working at 180 Medical.
Melissa, tell us about your role as a Documentation Specialist.
I’m in a specialized role as an Insurance Specialist, so I work with all kinds of insurance verification requests that come in for our existing customers. I handle insurance changes and updates as well as insurance coverage questions.
As Documentation Specialists, we maintain and update our customers’ accounts with current insurance information and up-to-date documentation or authorizations. I also review documentation that qualifies customers for certain advanced products.
What’s the best part about working at 180 Medical?
I love getting to play a part in helping our customers get the supplies they need! Knowing that what I do makes a difference in someone’s life and helps them get their much-needed medical supplies is so fulfilling. I’ve always wanted to work in a career where I could help people, and I’ve definitely found that here at 180 Medical.
I also love how collaborative and spirited our team is. We have an amazingly positive atmosphere, always celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, and big wins. We always try to infuse a little positivity into every day.
Do you participate in any of 180 Medical’s social clubs?
Yes! As an avid writer, I’m in the 180 Medical Journal Club, and I love it! 180 Medical’s social clubs are a great way to meet people outside your department and connect over shared interests.
Can you share a memorable experience of making a positive impact on a customer’s life?
As a person with medical conditions myself and also having issues with my health insurance in the past, I know how confusing insurance can be. And I know just how anxiety-inducing it can be when you’re uncertain of how your needed medical services will be covered.
I’ve had so many moments of encountering a customer struggling with their insurance or worried about their coverage, and I am so honored and happy that I get to help by verifying their insurance and digging in to find the issue. Then, I communicate that as clearly as I can to the Client Specialist helping them so they’re fully informed and we can get their catheter or ostomy supplies to them ASAP!
Tell us about yourself outside of work.
I am from Indiana, originally from the Indianapolis area, but my husband Derek and I moved about 2 years ago to Muncie, IN, to be closer to his family. My husband’s teenage brother Braydon lives with us, along with his other adult brother Caleb, and we have 2 dogs, Link and Luma, and Caleb’s cat Atreus (I call him Kiki) lives with us as well. It’s a full house, but it’s a blast!
I love watching football (we’re big Colts fans) or playing video games, particularly Super Smash Bros. I always play as Kirby! We love going out to farmer’s markets with the dogs. My other hobbies include writing, reading, listening to all kinds of music, going to concerts when I can, and vintage shopping and thrifting.
What’s something special on your bucket list?
Since I was young, my biggest bucket list item has been to visit all 50 states. I’ve visited 12 so far and am excited to continue traveling and checking more states off my list!
What’s a quote that keeps you inspired?
